Prior to the introduction of the AL system in the late 1990s, this new PSLE scoring system was built on T-scores. This was a measure of statistical accuracy between one student with that of their peers. This system placed an emphasis on the standing of students. This often resulted in an intense level of tension and competition amongst students. To encourage an individual and a more comprehensive assessment method, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has launched an AL system. It replaces T-scores or old PSLE scoring systems that are more precise with wide achievement levels.
In accordance with the AL PSLE score system, each PSLE subject, which comprises English Language, Mother Tongue Language, Mathematics and Science is assessed with eight ALs that vary from AL 1 (highest) up to AL 8 (lowest ). Students are assigned to the AL that best reflects their performance in terms of the goals within the curriculum. This model is based on individual performance and not comparisons, which decreases the expectation of students to be better than their peers as well as facilitates being more focused in their learning.

MEET OUR TEAMAs per the current PSLE scoring system, the total PSLE scores will be calculated by adding the AL total in each subject. The lowest score that can be achieved is 4, and the maximum score could be scored at 32. The greater spectrum of scores offers an exact and full view of the overall performance of students that reduces the importance of attaining specific benchmarks while giving a complete overview of their strengths and areas to improve.

The Fairer Evaluation AL system provides a more equitable assessment for students who have different capabilities and learning styles. It also lessens the stress of assessments that have been standardized.

Singaporean students take part in the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) including its Science paper, to demonstrate their knowledge of Science concepts.
